The privacy watchdog in Hong Kong has entered Worldcoin‘s offices due to concerns that the biometric data being collected in exchange for WLD tokens may be handled illegally.
In a statement, the Office of the Privacy Commissioner for Personal Data expressed its concerns about Worldcoin’s operations and the potential risks to personal data privacy.
The watchdog has entered six of Worldcoin’s premises in order to carry out investigations. The watchdog also believes that Worldcoin may be in violation of Hong Kong’s Personal Data Privacy Ordinance in the collection and processing of biometric data.
As a result, an investigation has been launched in order to protect the privacy of members of the public.
In light of these events, Hong Kong Privacy Commissioner Ada Chung Lai-ling has advised the public to be cautious in sharing sensitive personal data, including through activities like iris scanning, as they may be at risk of mishandling.
