A former Block payments company employee downloaded data from approximately 8.2 million US users of the Cash App in December last year, the company has announced in a report to the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC).
The Block (formerly Square) security breach was discovered “recently.” According to the report:
“Although the employee had regular access to this data as part of his past job duties, in this case it was obtained without permission after the dismissal.”
The information includes the full names and numbers of brokerage accounts and, in some cases, the value and structure of portfolios. However, Block has assured that there are no logins, passwords, social security numbers, addresses and other personal information in the data.
The company’s share price has fallen from around $145 to about $125, which is a 14% decline.
