The Prospera economic zone in Honduras has announced Bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies actually operate as legal tender within its jurisdiction.
The zone is located on the island of Roatan and enjoys considerable autonomy, including a private government, as well as its own fiscal, regulatory and legal systems. The statement reads:
“Prospera also accepts Bitcoin taxes and fees and allows residents to build a cryptocurrency-focused business using an optimal regulatory framework, backed by world-class AML and KYC standards.”
The jurisdiction has offered municipalities in Honduras and foreign companies the opportunity to issue bonds in digital gold to attract foreign direct investment.
The head of the autonomous island region of Madeira in Portugal, Miguel Albuquerque, has also advocated the legalization of Bitcoin. However, he has not outlined specific plans in this direction.
