Fort Worth, a city of Texas, has just become the first US city to start mining Bitcoin at the initiative of its mayor Matty Parker, CNBC reports.
The farm of the three Antminer S9 miners from Bitmain were placed in the IT department of the city hall. The devices are connected to a private network for security purposes.
Cryptocurrency mining requires a large amount of electricity and technical personnel for maintenance. Therefore, according to the mayor, the project began with a small pilot.
Parker has noted that it will not bring significant income, but it will be able to compensate for the cost of electricity consumed.
In addition to receiving a digital asset on the city balance , the use of Bitcoin is intended to increase the visibility of Fort Worth:
“Regarding Fort Worth, a lot of people don’t know who we are. We want to change this picture and believe that technical innovations, including cryptocurrency, are the way to do this.”
